Assignment 1

For this assignment,
You need to reflect on your perspectives as a prospective teacher related to the following issues:
a) Your ideas related to the nature of translation (do you regard it as a product or a process,or both? Why?

I think that it is a process of conveying information thanks to linguistic and cultural knowledge. Just finding the equivalent word does not mean that we have the adequate translation of the text. While we are translating, we should pay attention to transformation of culture and language structure. Also, it is a product because after the process, you have the product of the translation.

b) Your own definition of translation

Translation means communicate the meaning of a language regarding the culture.

c) Your previous experiences with translation (with examples) in Turkey and abroad (both in formal and informal contexts) and the impact of such activities on your professional and personal development

My aunt has been working in AvivaSa. She is usually having documents to be translated from Turkish to English. So, she sends them to me. I've done them many times. I had hard times to translate them. Terms are very strange to me. I always looked the terms up in the dictionary. When she sent me another document another time, since I was familiar with these terms, I tried to finish it much earlier. Moreover, my sister studies Economics. when she was studying her lessons, she could not understand because her books were in English. Then she asked me to translate them. The terms in English and Turkish were also hard for me. She was helping me to find the correct word. I believe that these translations have an impact on my development because when I come across a term anywhere, I can easily understand what it means. Because, to translate them, I really search many thing to find the equivalent. So, I have learnt many new terms.

d) Your ideas as to the contributions of the translation activities to your linguistic and communicative competence in English?

Translation activities make me learn new vocabularies. Moreover, I think that I have an idea about culture of that language. I believe that living America contributed to me many thing in terms of linguistic competence. When I try to translate something, their culture, talking style and others come to my mind. Considering them, I translate the texts. As an example, it was after 15 days when we went there,I guess. My friends and I wanted to go somewhere, I couldn't remember its name. We asked a girl, who is an American. We said 'How we can go there?'. She replied us saying 'How can we get there?'. She said she had many Turkish friends and used 'go' to ask somewhere. She corrected us and said 'you should use 'get' instead of 'go'. '

e)Your ideas related to the practice of translation in Turkey and the importance of translation courses for English language teaching?

I really like to have translation class in my department. However, I believe that we can have more translation course as we have just two classes, one of which is from English to Turkish and the other is from Turkish to English. I want to share one of my experiences. Yesterday, I went to Yasemin Karakaya Primary School. Since one of classes does not have their teacher, I went to that class. They are 5th graders. We played an English word game. One of the students said 'elk' as an English word. I haven't heard this word before. I said to them I don't know this word. I asked him the meaning of the word. He said that it means 'ceylan'. Another student said to me 'Nasıl İngilizce öğretmenisiniz bilmiyorsunuz'. I was shocked when I heard this. I answered him by saying 'I heard it for the first time'. Generally, we, english teachers, are seen as translators :)
